Many people drink alcohol happily and safely, but did you know that a large proportion of alcohol industry revenue comes from dangerous, socially destructive heavy drinking? There is a national alcohol crisis. At least 700,000 New Zealanders are heavy drinkers. Binge drinking and associated alcohol damage are part of New Zealand's way of life. But change is coming. Join us at this public lecture and hear more about the 5+ Solution and how you can become involved.
Doug Sellman, MBChB, PhD, FRANZCP, FAChAM, is a psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist who has been working in the addiction treatment field in New Zealand for the last 25 years. He has been the Director of the National Addiction Centre, University of Otago, since 1996.
Professor Sellman is embarking on a national alcohol series during sabbatical leave (Sept-Nov 2009) supported by the University of Otago and the Canterbury District Health Board. This series of public lectures is launching a new national group called Alcohol Action NZ.
The main points outlined in is lecture are that we are in the middle of a national alcohol crisis, driven in part by excessive commercialisation of alcohol and that to gain better control of alcohol the public need to be better informed about the issue. He also argues for the need for more effective regulation of the supply, marketing and sale of alcohol in New Zealand. He presents an international-derived, scientifically based set of policy directives called the 5+ Solution as a guide to future alcohol policy.
Entry to the event is free but it is recommended that you get to the venue early.
