CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design)

Council is responsible for many of the pubic spaces within the district, whether they be parks and reserves, walkways or community buildings.  A major feature in the design of public space is the use of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).  CPTED is an approach to design that focuses on achieving spaces likely to minimize crime and victimization.  Design principles include surveillance (people are present and can see what is going on), access management (methods are used to attract people and vehicles to some places and restrict them from others), territorial reinforcement (clear boundaries encourage community ‘ownership’ of the space) and quality environments (good quality, well maintained places attract people and support surveillance).
