Ferndene Off-Road Project
Ferndene Off-Road Project
In late 2008 a series of meetings were facilitated by council between young car enthusiasts and police to consider a dedicated private off road facility. The aim was to “establish a recreation facility for the safe enjoyment of motor vehicle based recreation for the youth drivers of Taranaki”.
The project set out to develop a not-for-profit incorporated society, operated as a club whose members could organise and participate in youth driver events.
By developing a private off public road venue where youth drivers could participate safely in the recreational car use it was hoped that unlawful driving behaviour on New Plymouth District street would be reduced while the relationship between Police and youth drivers could be promoted.
A group was formed and established themselves as an incorporated society operating under the name of ‘Taranaki Recreational Motorsport Association Inc’. The group has a committee and regularly run motorsport events located at Ferndene Speedway. The focus of these events is to allow participation and spectating of car ‘burnouts’ on a purpose built concrete pad.
The Taranaki Recreational Motorsport Association Inc society are committed to managing events located at a private off-road facility for otherwise illegal driving behaviour and wish to form part of a solution to reducing this type of crime. This group now operates independently from council and is self funding through gate sales.
