Graffiti Reduction

A number of activities operate throughout the New Plymouth District to raise awareness of, and reduce, the negative effects of graffiti vandalism.

These projects include the following:
  • Graffiti Removal

In general, the council will remove free of charge any graffiti than can be seen from a public space – such as a road, reserve, walkway or car park – regardless of whether the graffiti is on public or private property. Please contact New Plymouth District Council on 06 759 6060 or click on the Report Graffiti link.

  • Community Murals

A community mural is completed by people who live in a particular area, and allows youth as well as adults to work together and paint a mural in their own neighbourhood. Murals are usually coated with an anti-graffiti coating and are a great addition to local communities. Murals often serve to greatly reduce the incidents of graffiti vandalism in an area. For more information please contact Craig Campbell-Smart (Community Development) on 06 759 6060 or download the Community Mural Information/Funding Application Form.

  • Creative Youth Holiday Programmes

Creative Youth Holidays aims to provide positive diversionary art workshops, encompassing street art, media design, motion picture and other activities that youth have identified as a vehicle to express who they are. The Creative Workshops are run by WAVES youth service. For more information please contact WAVES on 06 757 9901 or download the Creative Youth Holidays promotional poster and referral form.

  • Resources for Communities

The Ministry of Justice have produced a "How To Stop Graffiti Guide" which provides useful tips for councils, schools, businesses and private residences.
