Neighbourhood Support

Neighbourhood Support works closely with Police and other organisations to make homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities safer and more caring places in which to live...

Neighbourhood Support

Neighbourhood Support New Zealand Incorporated was established in 1999 to promote and support the development of Neighbourhood Support in New Zealand.  Operating as a decentralised organisation, each area functions independently, attracting locally sourced funding.  The New Plymouth district comes under the North Taranaki Neighbourhood Support area.

The aims of Neighbourhood Support are to make homes, streets, neighbourhoods and communities safer and more caring places in which to live, and achieves this by working closely with Police and many other organisations in the community to reduce crime, improve safety and prepare to deal with emergencies and natural disasters.

Neighbourhood Support undertakes the following activity:

  • Encourage neighbours to talk to each other.
  • Minimize burglaries and car crime in local areas.
  • Share information that will help reduce the risk and fear of crime
  • Educate and empower neighbours to take responsibility for their own safety.
  • Support victims of crime.
  • Enhance the safety features and appearance of the neighbourhood.
  • Know when and how to contact police, and other emergency services or other support agencies.

North Taranaki Neighbourhood Support (NTNS) operates under a Trust structure and employs two coordinators.  Many urban and rural support groups have been established within New Plymouth.  Currently NTNS are focussing on high priority areas, identified through identified crime or community safety issues through Police.  Communication with member groups occurs through E-Watch bulletins and neighbourhood network volunteers.
