White Ribbon Day draws a big crowd

Around 200 people flocked to Puke Ariki Landing on 25th November to join the celebrations being held as part of White Ribbon Day 2009, an international event that aims to stop violence towards women.

48 white helium balloons represented the number of deaths this year due to family violence

Live Music, BBQ, free resources and a guest appearance by the Super Maori Fullus were among the attractions on offer. The early evening event attracted a range of people, including families who either relaxed on the lawn or played ball games. The event also drew in individuals on their way home from work who took the opportunity to relax and listen to the live band.

Local family violence prevention and support services were on hand to give out white ribbons, resources and information/advice to those who needed it. Detective Sergeant Dave Beattie, Police Family Violence Coordinator, took to the stage to highlight the impacts of family violence and to encourage those affected to seek help.

At the close of the event, organisers released 48 white helium balloons symbolising the number of deaths (at September this year) caused by family violence.
