Vogeltown Bowling Club supports NPiS Wellbeing Day
Vogeltown Bowling Club attracted over 80 older people to an event held to raise awareness of the links between keeping active and preventing falls.
Despite the predicted rain, the sun shone on an afternoon of Bowls, Golf Croquet, Tai Chi, Keep Fit to Music and other activities offered at an NPiS Older Persons Wellbeing Day held on 7th May 2009. The event set out to encourage older people to try out a range of physical activities while learning more about what they can do to prevent falls.
About 85 people came along to the wellbeing event, which was hosted by Vogeltown Bowling Club. A range of service providers were available to provide information and advice, including Taranaki DHB Physiotherapy (Otago Exercise Programme), Arthritis NZ, Age Concern, Parkinsons Society, Piki Te Ora Nursing Services and Taranaki Disability Centre.
Visitors to the event included residents from three local rest homes who joined in with golf croquet and a seated exercise session.
Our thanks to the Vogeltown Bowling Club members for being such wonderful hosts and making us all feel so welcome! Club members put on a wonderful afternoon tea and spent the afternoon teaching visitors the basic rules of golf croquet and lawn bowls.

The Modified Tai Chi 'taster' session (pictured left) was popular, with a number of older people coming forward at the end to put their name on the waiting list for the next Tai Chi class. A number of visitors on the day asked whether it would be possible to start up a Tai Chi class at the Vogeltown Bowling Club. The club were certainly keen to consider this idea so it is very possible that this suggestion will be taken up. Keep an eye on the news section of the website for more information on this.
Meanwhile, NPiS are putting together a DVD of the Vogeltown Bowling Club Wellbeing Day. If you would like a copy, so that you an see just how much fun our local wellbeing days are, please get in touch with Channa Perry on 06 753 7777 ext 8792.
