What is Modified Tai Chi?
Tai Chi involves a series of slow, fluid, gentle movements that improve mobility, flexibility and balance. Modified Tai Chi is a style of Tai Chi Developed for older people that focuses on preventing falls by improving lower limb strength and balance.
Tai Chi has been shown to reduce falls by up to 47%. It works by improving fitness, muscle strength, balance and flexibility. It can also help improve blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cardiovascular function and can help manage the symptoms of arthritis by increasing mobility and reducing pain.
Modified Tai Chi is taught in group-based classes across Taranaki, usually in community halls. The programme involved 2 one-hour Tai Classes a week run for 20 weeks (a total of 40 classes)
Who is eligible for Modified Tai Chi?
ACC-funded Tai Chi classes are available for those who meet the following criteria:
- Aged 65 years or older (55 years or older if Maori or Pacific)
- Living independently in the community
- Had a fall in the last 12 months (or deemed to be at high risk of a fall by a doctor or nurse)
- Been assessed to ensure that you are not in the small percentage of people too fit or frail for Modified Tai Chi
