Otago Exercise Programme Resources
What is the Otago Exercise Programme?
The Otago Exercise Programme (or OEP) is a home-based exercise programme that has been proven to reduce older adults' risk of falling. The programme consists of a series of leg-strengthening and balance-retraining exercises that get progressively more difficult as the person get stronger. It also involves a walking plan.
Research has shown that the OEP helps reduce falls in those with weak legs or impaired balance. It has been shown to reduce the chances of having a fall by 35% and also reduces the severity of falls.
What resources are available?
- OEP Exercise Programme Manual (contains diagrams, information and guidance about OEP exercises you can do at home)
- OEP Activities Booklet (contains useful ideas and tips about how you can increase your daily activity levels)
Can older people use the manual and carry out their own exercise at home?
To find out if the exercises are for you, please speak to your GP or a physiotherapist. A physiotherapist can explain which exercises will benefit you and check that you are able to do them safely. There will be some cost for this service. In the meantime the OEP Activities Booklet contains lots of useful tips about how you can increase your activity levels as part of daily life.
To contact a physiotherapist at the Taranaki District Health Board please call 06 753 6139 and ask to be put through to the Physiotherapy Department. Alternatively you can contact a private physiotherapist. (Note - There will be a charge for this service).
