Basic statistics on Fire Safety in New Zealand

National Fire Facts for 2007:

  • 73,333 incidents were attended by the Fire Service. This includes such things as fires, motor accidents and chemical emergencies
  • 24,279 fires were attended by the Fire Service, including 4,083 house fires
  • There were 5,476 vegetation fires
  • There were 33 fire deaths.

Smoke Alarm Facts:
  • Smoke alarms detect smoke before you can see or smell it
  • Having a smoke alarm in your house cuts your chance of dying in fire almost in half
  • Only 7 out of 10 New Zealand homes have a working smoke alarm
  • Smoke alarms need to be placed in every bedroom plus in the lounge and  hallways
  • Ideally smoke alarms should be placed in the middle of the ceiling
