Stratford Mountain Club

The Stratford Mountain Club was first established in 1910 with their focus revolving entirely around tramping and climbing. The first skiing on Mt Taranaki occurred in 1917 when a local man took a pair of home-made skis up to the snow! 

Stratford Mountain Club (SMC) now operates the Manganui Ski Field as well as managing the wonderfully equipped (and warm!) Manganui Lodge, situated at the base of the lift facility.

SMC also organise mountain safety training and seminars such as Avalanche Awareness and On-Mountain Emergencies.
