The aims of the Taranaki Suicide Prevention Needs Assessment were as follows:
Aim:The aim of the Needs Assessment is to provide local data and evidence to inform and support individuals, organisations and networks across the Taranaki region to take a strategic approach to planning, development and implementation of suicide prevention at the local level. The needs assessment also sets out to identify opportunities for improved co-ordination and collaboration across the suicide prevention sector. The New Zealand Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2008-12 has been used as the framework for the Needs Assessment process and the development of any recommendations for future action at the local level.
Objectives:
- To identify rates of self-harm and suicide among different population groups in Taranaki using routine quantitative data sources
- To identify population groups at greatest risk of self-harm and suicide through community consultation with key stakeholders
- To undertake a mapping of existing services and activities that contribute towards the prevention of self-harm and suicide
- To identify gaps in existing service provision and explore opportunities for future service development
- To identify opportunities for improvements in the co-ordination of local suicide prevention initiatives
- To provide recommendations to inform the development of a strategic and co-ordinated approach to suicide prevention across Taranaki
