New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy 2006-2016

The New Zealand Suicide Prevention Strategy 2006–2016 provides a framework to guide and co-ordinate suicide prevention activities across various sectors, and will guide efforts nationally over the next 10 years. The strategy builds on and replaces The New Zealand Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy: ‘In Our Hands’ and ‘Kia Piki te Ora o te Taitamariki’, and draws from an expanded knowledge base of suicide and suicide prevention.

The inspiration for the strategy is a vision of a society where all people feel they:

  • are valued and nurtured
  • value their own life
  • are supported and strengthened if they experience difficulties
  • do not want to take their lives or harm themselves.

The overall purposes of the strategy are to:

  • reduce the rate of suicide and suicidal behaviour
  • reduce the harmful effect and impact associated with suicide and suicidal behaviour on families/whänau, friends and the wider community
  • reduce inequalities in suicide and suicidal behaviour
