St. John Bosco Swimmers
Local primary school take action to improve the swimming skills of their senior students.
St. John Bosco primary school have responded to national concerns about children's swimming skills by organising affordable lessons at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre during school hours.
During Term 1 of 2009 over 100 students travelled by bus to the pool to take part in a set of swimming lessons targeted to each students ability level. For some students it was a chance to brush up on their stroke technique, but for others it was the first time they had taken part in a learn to swim programme.
Students paid $5 per lesson (a total of $40 for 8 lessons) and lessons were held twice a week on Monday and Friday afternoons during school time.
The school felt the project had been a huge success, particularly as it had built the confidence of those children who were unable to swim and had encouraged them to begin swimming lessons outside of school. The school plan to offer the programme of swimming lessons again in Term 4.
