A WITT student prepares to take the Fatal Vision Goggles Challenge!

Students were invited to participate in an impairment awareness activity using Roadsafe Taranaki's 'Fatal Vision' goggles. The goggles simulate the visual effects of alcohol impairment and highlight the co-ordination and reflex difficulties that are associated with alcohol use. Students were asked to take part in a simple obstacle course ... which becomes far from simple when the goggles are put on!

Similarities between the effects of driver fatigue and drink driving were also highlighted during the activity. A quiz testing students' knowledge on driver fatigue and alcohol was running throughout the day and over 170 students took part in. All quiz entries were put into a prize draw for a $500 voucher, sponsored by ACC and Masons Appliances.

New Plymouth Police ensured everyone was well fed by cooking almost 400 sausages. They also used the opportunity to carry out a crime and safety perceptions survey with students at the event.

Other attractions included abseiling (down the side of the WITT building), free gyroscope rides, free candy floss and a number of stands and displays from local service providers.
