FDMC students get READY2DRIVE!

Year 10 students from Francis Douglas Memorial College took part in a day of practical activities aimed at raising their awareness of road safety issues affecting young drivers.

A vehicle extraction demonstration was one of the highlights of the Ready2Drive event.

Activities offered during the day included a chance to test their road rules knowledge on the AA's on-line practice theory test, a 'ride' on Roadsafe Taranaki's seatbelt simulator, a visit to the Police 'Booze Bus' to find out more about processing drunk drivers and navigating an obstacle course while wearing a pair of fatal vision "beer" goggles.

Other activities included an on-line scooter safety activity and a chance to find out more about how the emergency services respond at road crash sites.

The event was a partnership initiative between the school, New Plymouth injury Safe, Police, Ambulance, Fire, Roadsafe Taranaki, SADD (Students Against Driving Drunk) and AA Advanced Driver Training.

At the end of the event the students were treated to a free sausage sizzle, music from ZM Hits and a chance to witness one of their fellow students "rescued" from a crashed car in a mock vehicle extraction demonstration with the fire service and ambulance crew.

Feedback from students has been positive and it is hoped that the event will be offered to other schools over the coming year.
