Kakaramea wakes drivers up to effects of fatigue

The findings of a Roadsafe Taranaki fatigue stop held in Kakaramea on Sunday suggests that some drivers are still slow to wake up to the message about driver fatigue.

This driver was one of 644 stopped during South Taranaki's first ever 'Fatigue Stop', held in Kakaramea.

644 cars were stopped and surveyed during the one day fatigue stop, and 31% of drivers stated that they thought it was safe to drive for over 3 hours without a break.

350 cars were heading south to the major centres (Palmerston North, Wellington and regions) and 294 were heading north, most of them travelling to Taranaki. All of the drivers stopped were provided with information about fatigue, a voucher for a free cup of tea/coffee, a water bottle and a local map highlighting road hazards across the region.

The fatigue stop was the first one to be held in South Taranaki, and was organised by Roadsafe Taranaki's Road Safety Coordinator, Marion Webby. Assistance on the day was provided by South Taranaki Police, ACC and Kakaramea School students and parents.
