Students and volunteers from school crossing patrols across North Taranaki took to the streets on 14th August to make 'visible' the work of student road safety teams in our community. The event, which was funded by Taranaki Roadsafe, was organised by police education officer, Anna Duncan and Roadsense facilitator, Kim Cribb.

420 students and adults attended the parade which started at the New Plymouth Shell service station and proceeded along Devon Street. The parade ended at the Huatoki Plaza with a sausage sizzle from the New Plymouth Police Blue Light BBQ. Mayor Peter Tennent addressed the colourful group acknowledging the many hours they put in to making our roads safer for children on their way to and from school.

Students at the parade were then rewarded with a trip to the movies at the Top Town Cinema complex. The competition for best and brightest Fluro wear was won by Puketapu School in Bell Block. The school received a selection of free sports equipment, donated by Rebel Sport, which was presented at their school assembly.

Feedback from schools has been extremely positive and the event provided another opportunity to further develop the relationship between local schools and the Police. It is hoped that Fluro Friday will become an annual event.
