New road rules include ban on use of cellphones while driving
A series of amendments to the Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 will come into effect on 1st November 2009, including a ban on the use of handheld mobile phones whilst driving.
This particular significant change in the amendment Rule addresses the risk arising from the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving. Research has shown that using a mobile phone while driving substantially increases the risk of having a crash, due to driver distraction. The number of crashes associated with mobile phone use has increased steadily over the last 5 years.
The following information sheet provides more information about the ban on hand-held mobile phones along with information about the other amendments to the Road Rule.
