Spotswood College Students get Ready 2 Drive!
Around 90 year ten students participated in a range of practical road safety activities. Once again the fatal vision goggles and seat belt simulator proved to be a fun and engaging way of conveying a serious message. Since the programme was first held at Francis Douglas Memorial College in June, an additional module on tyre safety (run by Spotswood Automotive) has been added.
The Fire Service and Red Cross demonstrated a dramatic casualty extraction (pictured below) from a crashed vehicle and students visited the ‘booze bus’ and the scooter survival website. Feedback from the event found that 87% of students felt that the day had changed how they think about road safety, and that their awareness of road hazards in particular had been increased. Another Ready 2 Drive event is planned for New Plymouth Boys High School early next year.
Ready 2 Drive is a free school based programme and runs for half a day. If your school would like to find out more, or would like to register for the programme, please contact Kath Forde (ACC) on 06 759 0730 or Senior Constable Anna Duncan on 06 759 5500.
