Driver Distraction
Evidence has shown that using a mobile phone while driving substantially increases your risk of having a crash due to driver distraction.
The rate of crashes associated with mobile phone use has increased steadily over the last 5 years. As a result, an amendment to the Road User Rule came into force on 1st November 2009 banning the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving. Information about this new amendment, along with a series of other amendments to the Road User Rule is available here.
Drivers should be aware that hand-held mobile phones are not the only distractions that increase their risk of having a crash. The New Zealand Transport Agency website lists a number of other distractions including food/drink, other passengers, car stereos and scenery.
