Speed

Speed is the single biggest factor in fatal road crashes each year. Speeds have been falling and there is greater awareness that driving at speed is dangerous but each year there are still more than 100 fatal crashes in which someone was driving too fast for the conditions.

Driving at excessive speed remains a serious road safety and public health issue. Speed is the number one killer on our roads, contributing to over 120 deaths and 2,600 injuries per year. 58% of all speed-related crashes occur on corners.

Roadsafe Taranaki are working to promote safe driving practices with a focus on high risk groups in rural areas.

A number of initiatives are taking place locally including:

  • Education and promotion delivered by Roadsafe Taranaki, ACC, Police and other groups
  • Media campaigns to support local initiatives such as operation 'Speed Kills Kids' in rural areas
  • Use of speed trailer and mobile patrols to review driver behaviour
  • Supporting national police campaigns that target speeding drivers
  • Development and distribution of regional map promoting 'drive to the conditions' and highlighting unique general and localised hazards on Taranaki roads
  • Development and distribution of vehicle maintenance checklist for use at home
  • Use of speed tube data to identify speeding black spots and target police resources
  • Enforcement through police speed checkpoints
  • Young Driver education days that raise awareness of risks of driving at excessive speed
  • Road Safety education and awareness activities (e.g. crossing patrols, street reclaiming parties, cycle training).
  • KIDDS (Kids Involved in Driving Down Speed) initiative with primary schools to help them identify and address road safety issues, including excessive speeding around schools
