Representatives joined Hon Kate Wilkinson, Minister of Labour, in the formal launch of the BeST initiative at the Be Safe Taranaki Centre (previously known as the Taranaki HSE Centre) in Constance Street, New Plymouth. BeST represents a group of Taranaki organisations working together to help reduce fatalities and injuries in workplaces throughout Taranaki. BeST aims for zero harm and to instill best practice health, safety and environmental protection behaviours.
In line with its name, BeST is based on best practice in terms of improving workplace safety. International examples show that when businesses, local and central government, and community groups come together with the collective aim to improve health and safety, substantial positive changes can occur. Training young adults before they enter the workforce, with the right safety skills, is paramount and the provision of such training will be one area of focus for the BeST partnership in the future.
BeST is a New Zealand first, centred around the unique Health, Safety and Environment Training Centre based in Constance Street, Waiwakaiho. It is hoped that other regions will adopt a similar model that combines partnership working between industry, government and community with the opportunity for practical, hands on training that is offered at the Be Safe Taranaki Centre.
