Stratford Peaker project sparks interest in home safety

Around 90 construction workers involved in the Stratford Peaker project turned out to a lunchtime safety expo that aimed to highlight the links between health and safety at home and in the workplace.

A height safety demonstration unit was among the attractions at the Stratford Peaker safety expo

The expo, organised by United Group's Health & Safety Manager, Marcia Reynolds, was held on 7th September to mark this years' Safety NZ Week (7-13th September). Workers who visited the expo over the lunchtime period were offered free health checks and health promotion information as well as having an opportunity to enter an ACC home safety quiz and win spot prizes. Other activities included a working at heights display using the height safety demonstration unit and sun safe activities organised by the Cancer Society.

Organisers of the event felt it was a huge success and encouraged workers to think about how they can take workplace safety lessons into the home to keep them and their families safe. The event also highlighted the importance of personal health and wellbeing, and how this is intrinsically linked to workplace safety. Marcia Reynolds felt that the involvement of other agencies was key to the events' success.

"By having other agencies such as ACC and the Cancer Society join us on the day we were able to take our safety messages further and encourage our staff to think about safety after they leave the work gates. We had an incredible 16,500 injuries at home in Taranaki last year so it is important that staff who think safe at work continue to do so when they leave the work gates" said Marcia.
