The NPiS Gateway Safety Challenge is an annual competition open to secondary schools in Taranaki. Teams of 4 students from each school participate in a range of practical safety activities for which they receive marks for safety knowledge and skills. Activities focus on home safety, fire safety, road safety, chemical handling, hazard identification and other topics. The activities aim to reinforce existing learning on the Gateway programme as well as equipping students with new knowledge and skills. After the practical activities, students take part in a team based safety quiz and the winning team is presented with a trophy. A range of safety professionals and organisations provide support to enable the competition to take place including ACC, NZ Fire, Roadsafe Taranaki, NZ Red Cross, Taranaki Regional Council (Civil Defence) and Department of Labour.
The event is held at the Taranaki HSE Centre, a practical health and safety training centre based in New Plymouth.
