Skills Bus Tour 2009

New Plymouth District Council co-ordinated the Taranaki Skills Bus Tour 2009 - providing year 10 students from Taranaki secondary schools a one-day taster of trade and industry.

The Taranaki Skills Bus Tour 2009 aimed to raise the profile of trade and industry as genuine options for school leavers. The event offered a one-day taster or trade and industry to year 10 students and provided an opportunity to create connections between local schools and industry. In the longer term the project aims to address skills shortages in these areas within Taranaki.

The event also provided an opportunity to profile the Taranaki HSE Centre and to highlight the importance of good health & safety practice within trade and industry.

8 Taranaki secondary schools participated in the Skills Bus Tour. Students undertook a health and safety briefing session at the Taranaki HSE Centre in the morning followed by site visits across 8 local workplaces. Site visits focused on the engineering, oil & gas, agriculture and construction trades. Employers who hosted site visits included Methanex, Fitzroy Engineering, Whitakers Civil Engineering, Clelands Construction, ICL Construction, Barretts Farm, MCK Metals Pacific and Energy Works.

Feedback from schools and employers following the Skills Bus Tour has been extremely positive and there are plans to host the Skills Bus Tour again in 2010. A copy of the Evaluation Report is available here.
